Sem needles were a flagship product of the Semler family's steel wire factory in Pilsen (Plzeň). In the first decades of the 20th century, the Sem company supplied steel wire to German companies for the manufacture of needles. From 1927 onwards, however, the company was able to manufacture the needles itself for the domestic and foreign markets.

The beautiful illustrations on the tins were mostly created by anonymous artists employed by the Herold company in Bavaria (Germany).
